UFC 116: Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin

At last night’s UFC 111 post fight press conference, UFC President Dana White confirmed that undefeated UFC Interim heavyweight champion, Shane Carwin will likely face UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar in a title unification bout planned for the UFC 116 at the MGM Grang Garden Arena on July 3 in Las Vegas, NV.

Carwin was granted the title match after defeating Frank Mir at UFC 111:St-Pierre vs. Hardy, last night at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Shane Carwin, speaking at the post-fight press conference, said:

“It’s been a long time coming”

“I see it as destiny. Brock and I were both national (collegiate) champions at about the same time in wrestling, and we never got to meeting in wrestling. Now here we are 10 years later, and we finally get to meet. And it’s on a much bigger stage, the biggest stage in the world, and I’m excited for it.”

“I’m excited he’s back, and the champ’s back, and he’s absolutely right there.”

Dana White, speaking at the post-fight press conference, said:

“I didn’t want to have talk to these guys – especially this guy (Carwin)”

“This guy has been dogged more times in a half year than any fighter we’ve had. We had already made it an interim title fight, and we didn’t want to go back and say ‘never mind.’ It was already done. The wheels were in motion, so we kept it an interim title fight.”

“Now these guys will fight.”
