The UFC suspend’s Chael Sonnen and freezes contract for the time being

The UFC have today decided to suspend former middleweight contender, Chael Sonnen following the news that now he’s facing federal charges over money laundering, something he clearly needs to sort out before he can focus on his career inside the octagon.

UFC President, Dana White, speaking via TMZ, said:

“Chael Sonnen has gone through a lot in the last few months and we think it’s important for him to focus on getting his personal life together before focusing on his career in the UFC. I spoke with Chael earlier today and he agrees that setting priorities in his life is the best thing for him right now. I sincerely hope Chael is able to straighten out his personal life.”

The move comes as a bit of a shock after he was paired to fight at UFC 128 in March against Japanese hero, Yoshihiro Akiyama. That said the fight would come ten days prior to his sentencing for money laundering, hardly the best preparation heading into any fight.
