Renato “Babalu” Sobral Officially Retires from MMA

Renato Sobral has called it quits on his 16-year mixed martial arts career. “Babalu” decided to end it on June 19th 2013, putting his gloves down in the middle of the octagon after a third round technical knockout loss to Jacob Noe in the Bellator 96 Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament semifinals at Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma.

Sobral, 37,is leaving the MMA on a two-fight losing streak, failing to bring back his struggling career under Bellator. The Brazilian has only won twice in the past four years, bouncing from promotion-to-promotion with below average results.

His odyssey began shortly after intentionally choking David Heath unconscious at UFC 74 back in 2007, admitting that he was “teaching him a lesson” for calling him a “mother fucker.”UFC President Dana White was not pleased and let the popular fighter go shortly after the incident.
