Raphael Assunaco Out For At Least 2 Months Due To Broken Ankle

Another bantamweight contender has been pushed to the sidelines due to an injury. Raphael Assuncao will be out of action during the coming weeks after breaking his ankle during training.

Assuncao broke news of the injury via Twitter on Monday.

“I am devastated to inform that my title shot hopes will be even further delayed due to broken ankle suffered in training, I am sorry once again.”

Assuncao is a No. 1 contender in the 135-pounds division since last year after a perfect 7-0 record in the bantamweight division, including a win over current champion T.J. Dillashaw.

Assuncao was set to face current champion Renan Barao in May, but that fight is has now been delayed and Dillashaw will get the shot instead. Barao was given an immediate rematch, which pushed Assuncao to the sidelines again. According to sources Assuncao is expected to be out for about 8 to 10 weeks but will not require surgery on the ankle.
