Matt Hume States Why Ben Askren Isn’t Fighting For The Title At ONE FC: Honor and Glory

A few months back it was announced that former Bellator Champion Ben Askren would be getting an immediate title shot in his ONE FC debut at it’s Singapore show in May this year. But it was recently released that Askren will not be getting a title fight but will be facing eastern European MMA champion Bakhtiyar Abbasov.

ONE FC matchmaker Matt Hume released a statement to explain why Askren wasn’t going to be fighting for the title against current champion Nobutatsu Suzuki. Nobutatsu Suzuki became the inaugural ONE FC Welterweight Champion last month by beating MMA veteran Brock Larson at ONE FC: WAR OF NATIONS.

Heres what he had to say:

“After Suzuki’s last fight, we gave him a few weeks to confirm that he was injury free and able to resume training to defend the title on May 30th. He still had some lingering injuries and couldn’t confirm by the deadline, so we proceeded with other options to match Ben.

Ben has never fought under the Global rule set, this is a great opportunity for both Ben and Bakhtiyar to get that experience before moving closer to a title shot. Suzuki’s injuries are not serious and he is looking forward to defending the title asap after May.”
