M-1 Global Heavyweight Champion, Guram Gugenishvili Killed in Car Accident at 28 Years Old

Heavyweight prospect Guram Gugenishvili died in a car accident Sunday in his native Georgia. M-1 Global, Gugenishvili’s longtime promoter, confirmed the tragedy today though details of the accident have not yet been released. Gugenishvili was 28 years old.

The organization said this in a statement:

“He was a great athlete and a kind, open-hearted person,”

A physically gifted fighter with a powerful grappling base, 6-foot-5 Gugenishvili won multiple M-1 heavyweight titles. In April, he returned from an injury-induced 16-month hiatus to punch out Tony Bonello under the Inoki Genome Fight banner in what would be his final bout.
