K-1 Hero’s MW GP champ, Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto in negotiations with UFC

One of the biggest prizes in MMA today, Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, was called out by WEC posterboy Urijah Faber over and over again during his WEC featherweight title reign, with the UFC/WEC merger in motion, the doors have opened for a potential match.

It was today revealed that Yamamoto (18-3) is in active talks with the UFC. If signed, his debut could come as soon as February or March. The UFC have been successful in grabbing other Japanese fighters in Takeya Mizugaki, Yoshiro Maeda and Akitoshi Tamura, among others.

UFC president Dana White, speaking during a WEC 53 conference call Tuesday, said::

“I’ve been a ‘Kid’ Yamamoto fan for a long time,” White said following UFC 94. “I’d love to get him over here.

“There’s two fights left on [Yamamoto’s] K-1 contract, and he told me his dream is to end his career over here with us. So I’d like to see it happen.”
