Two massive fights were announced tonight for the UFC 169 Super Bowl Weekend event in Newark, New Jersey, With Jon Jones defending against number one contender, Glover Teixeira and heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Frank Mir facing off.
This news comes via The Wrestling Observer. The UFC released the fights earlier today. The fight between Overeem and Mir was originally set for UFC 167 but was moved to give Mir more time to recover from his knockout at the hands of Josh Barnett.
Jones recently defended his title when he defeated Alexander Gustafsson in a close unanimous decision win at UFC 165, a fight that swung one way and then the other. Teixeira has won all four fight’s he’s had since debuting inside the octagon, defeating Kyle Kingsbury, Fabio Maldonado, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and now Ryan Bader.
Overeem was handed a shot at the UFC title not so long ago but served a suspension for elevated levels of testosterone. Mir is on a three-fight losing streak, the first of his mixed martial arts career. He was defeated by Junior dos Santos when the Brazilian was champion before being outpointed by Daniel Cormier.
