Henderson/Diaz, Shogun/Gustafsson, and Penn/MacDonald at UFC on FOX 5

Three UFC on FOX 5 bouts have today been confirmed by promotion officials as the lightweight title goes up for grabs when current champion, Benson Henderson meets “Ultimate Fighter” season five winner, Nate Diaz. Former light heavyweight champion, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua squares off against top prospect, Alexander Gustafsson and former two-division champion, BJ Penn takes on Canadian prospect, Rory MacDonald. UFC on FOX 5 will take place on December 8th, 2012 at a location yet to be determined.

Henderson made it five in a row inside the octagon just days ago at UFC 150, successfully defending his title by earning a controversial unanimous decision over former champion, Frankie Edgar. Diaz dominated Takanori Gomi, Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller to earn his shot at the gold. 11 of his 16 career victories come by submission and he has been finished only once in nearly eight years.

Rua is coming off a technical knockout victory over Brandon Vera at UFC on FOX 4. He won two of his last three fights since relinquishing the light heavyweight title to Jon Jones at UFC 128, defeating Forrest Griffin before dropping a unanimous decision to Dan Henderson last November in what some call the “Fight of the Year”. Gustafsson has won six of his seven fights inside the octagon, winning five straight fights leading up to this one, he was seen outpointing Thiago Silva at UFC on FUEL 2.

Penn has not been seen since suffering a bloody decision defeat to former Strikeforce champ, Nick Diaz last October. “The Prodigy” went 1-1-1 since returning to the welterweight division after losing the lightweight title to Frankie Edgar, knocking out Matt Hughes before drawing with Jon Fitch last year. MacDonald has been perfect so far except a 2010 TKO defeat to current interim welterweight champion, Carlos Condit. Since then he has put together three consecutive wins, most recently finishing Che Mills at UFC 145. MacDonald was initially supposed to meet Penn in September at UFC 152, but that booking was scrapped after the Canadian suffered a large cut during training.
