DREAM.16: Shinya Aoki vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri in July

Shinya Aoki is scheduled to make his US debut against current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez on April 17, 2010 at Strikeforce: Nashville. He won’t be sticking around too long though as he makes his return to Japan to fight Tatsuya Kawajiri at DREAM.16 planned for July.

Kawajiri called out Aoki this past October at DREAM.11 after Aoki submitted Joachim Hansen to win the DREAM lightweight title. Aoki ended up defeating Hansen in the second round via armbar to become the new DREAM Lightweight Champion.

They were rumored to meet at a possible meeting at “Dynamite!! 2009,” Aoki instead faced Sengoku lightweight champion Mizuto Hirota. Aoki stated that he felt insulted with the the short notice changes as he was looking forward to battling it out with one of the world’s other top lightweight competitors in Kawajiri

The same night, Kawajiri defeated Kazunori Yokota via unanimous decision in a fight he was expected to finish with ease, though he was fighting with a leg injury.
