Bellator 18: Hector Lombard vs. Paulo Filho non-title “super fight” official

Bellator Fighting Championships announced today another non-title super fight, this time pearing Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard (25-2-1 MMA, 3-0 BFC) and former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho (19-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) at Bellator 18.

The “super fight” will take place May 13 at Bellator 18, no location or venue is confirmed as of yet, but the event will be televised live on FOX Sports Net and highlighted on NBC and Telemundo.

As reported earlier, Season 1 champions will fight non-title fights this season, while No. 1 contenders are determined by season 2 eight-man tournaments.

Lombard, who is riding an 18-fight undefeated streak, won Bellator’s season-one middleweight tournament earning the organization’s first-ever 185-pound championship.

Filho who is no stranger to depression and chemical-dependency was ranked number two in the world before losing a strange WEC bout to Chael Sonnen at WEC 36, where he did not perform as he did in prior bouts, looking akward, slow, and distracted.

CEO Bjorn Rebney comments on Bellator’s season 2 super fights:

“Our super fights are designed to test our champions against the best available fighters”

“Paulo’s won three fights in the last eight months including an impressive submission victory over Melvin Manhoef in DREAM in July. When Paulo’s on his game, he is one of the most dangerous middleweights in the world. Just over a year ago he was ranked as one of the top 185-pounders on earth. Now, he’s back and winning frequently.”

“And, whereas other top middleweights wanted nothing to do with Hector Lombard, Paulo and his team agreed to take this fight. As I have said frequently, I believe Hector Lombard is one of the top middleweights in the world, and this fight could be a great test for Hector and a great fight for MMA fans.”
