Melendez on Shields:

Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez gives his thoughts on his training partner, Jake Shields newest move to the UFC from Strikeforce.

Melendez, speaking via MMAWeekly.com, said:

“I think he’s going to do great out there. I really want to see him fight Georges St-Pierre. I know he can beat GSP and I look forward to seeing that happen. Of course I wish he was with me in Strikeforce, but he’s got to do what he’s got to do and I support him 100 percent. I think it’s time for him to go for broke. He already cleaned out Strikeforce, so now it’s time for him to clear out the UFC.”

GSP would consider retirement after

UFC welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre revealed that if he ever moved up to 185 pounds for a super fight with UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva he would consider retirement, saying after the fight there may be no more goals left.

GSP, speaking via MMAJunkie.com, said:

“Growing up in my career, I always fix my goals very high and every time I achieve one of my [goals], I fix another goal to reach. It’s important as a martial artist [never to be] satisfied because otherwise there is no point to keep doing what you’re doing.”

“If I go up in weight, it’s going to be hard to go down. If I put on lean muscle like I already did recently … it’s going to be hard to come back down. So it’s not like I go up and I go down. I have to be very careful with what I do.” Continue reading »

James Toney:

Having held belts in an array of weight classes, the current heavyweight boxing champ is serious about capturing titles in both MMA and boxing. Apparently shocking the MMA world and taking out Randy Couture on his UFC debut is not enough, “Lights Out” looks to take out the current UFC heavyweight champion of the world, Brock Lesnar.

Toney, speaking via MMAWeekly.com, said

“I couldn’t come in the UFC and fight a bum, or a tune up fight. I have to fight the best. I am the best. I wanted to fight Brock Lesnar, but unfortunately at the time he was sick. I will be boxing and UFC champion at the same time. I’m officially a two-sport athlete”

“After I knock out Randy Couture, I’m coming for Brock’s bitch ass next. I don’t turn down nothing. Sometimes I don’t even turn down my collar.”

The pair first met at WEC 38 in January 2009, the fight was highly competitive and won the Fight of the Night award. However, the fight was stopped prematurely in the fifth round when Cerrone hit Varner’s temple with an illegal up-kick in the dying minutes while Varner was still on the ground. Since then Varner lost his title almost a year later to Benson Henderson before picking up a split draw against Kamal Shalorus. As for Cerrone, he’s 2-2 since the fight, losing twice to Benson Henderson, and picking up wins against James Krause and Ed Ratcliff.
