WSOF To Head To Japan For Heavyweight Title Fight

World Series of Fighting Global Championship has announced a heavyweight championship main event for their second event, which also marks their first event in Japan.

The match up will see Hungarian fighter Jani Istvan up against Russian knockout artist, Evgeny Erokhin.

Istvan is relatively unknown to the world of MMA outside of Eastern Europe, but is currently riding a seven-fight win streak, with six of those wins coming via knockout or submission within the first round.

Erokhin, brings his own impressive win streak into the decagon with six straight wins via knockout, including wins over Brett Rogers, Mike Kyle, Jeff Monson and Tim Hague.

Erokhin previously fought for the WSOF-GC World Heavyweight Championship back on 21 November, but was denied when the event was ruled a no-contest in the first round due to an inadvertent eye poke.

“The fans in China were denied the crowing of our first champion, but it was always our intention of having that title defended in Japan. Now the fans in Japan will be the ones to witness history,” said WSOF-GC president, Shawn Wright.

“It’s a true honor to be able to promote someone like Akihiro Gono, who is one of the true legends of Japanese MMA,” said Jason Lilly, VP of operations and matchmaker for WSOF-GC.

“Gono won’t be the only big name Japanese fighter on the card either. There is a world of talent there that will honor us by being a part of our first event in Japan.”

WSOF-GC will host WSOF-GC 2 Japan at Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo, Japan on 7 February.
