Rory MacDonald Injured, Saffiedine Declines, Condit vs. Hendricks at UFC 158

Canadian welterweight contender, Rory MacDonald has suffered a neck injury in training and has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 158 co-main event fight with Carlos Condit. However, the “Natural Born Killer” will still compete but against a fellow top contender in Johny Hendricks.

White, speaking via USA TODAY Sports late Monday evening, said:

“Once we knew Rory had to withdraw, we started looking for potential replacements, Johny Hendricks called me and said he wanted that fight, so we’re going to give it to him a shot at Carlos.”

Condit and MacDonald were scheduled for the co-main event of UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz, which takes place March 1th from Montreal’s Bell Centre. The winner was expected to earn a potential welterweight title shot. Hendricks was already on the card, expected to meet Jake Ellenberger. Now by moving into the co-main event slot vs. Condit, a one time potential title challenger could become the new number one contender with a victory in Montreal.

Ellenberger is still expected to compete at the event against an opponent to be determined. White also revealed his first option to fill in for the injured MacDonald was Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec Saffiedine before the Belgian fighter turned down the opportunity.
