“Shogun” Pulled from UFC 161, Could Face Chael Sonnen in Boston

The UFC has decided to pull former light heavyweight champion, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua from UFC 161 altogether, despite matching him up with Chael Sonnen. The UFC tweeted that Rua was left without an opponent, because of the injury to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The event will proceed with 11 fights, and Rua will fight soon.

According to sources close to the negotiations, they are now working on Rua vs. Sonnen for the debut show on Fox Sports 1, on August 17th at the T.D. Gardens in Boston.

“Shogun” has been up and down the ladder within his ranks, he has failed to earn-back-to-back victories inside the octagon since 2009 and was last defeated by Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on FOX 5.

Sonnen is coming off a couple of title defeats, one at middleweight to Anderson Silva and the other at light heavyweight to Jon Jones. Prior to that he defeated Brian Stann and Michael Bisping at 185 pounds.
