Nick Diaz Suspended for Twelve Months and Fined $60,000 by the NSAC

Former Strikeforce welterweight champion, Nick Diaz went in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission yesterday resulting in a one year suspension and a fine of 30% of his UFC 143 purse which translates to $60,00 after testing positive for marijuana use prior to his February fight with Carlos Condit.

Monday afternoon, after a long hearing, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) handed down the 12-month suspension to the former champ, retroactive to February 4th, 2012, the date of UFC 143. The fine is considerable since he will have to give up 30% of his $200,000 purse, $60,000. The suspension will run until February 4th, 2013.

Following his loss to Carlos Condit, Diaz’s post-fight drug test came back positive for the presence of marijuana metabolites. His team argued that the presence of metabolites in his system post-fight was not grounds for a suspension, and that medical marijuana is not prohibited out of competition, as well as making several other very sound points,
