Wonders From Down Under With Chris Mackinnon: Strikeforce And It’s Future

Is the UFC monopoly of the sport of MMA going to have an adverse effect for the sport? As WWE did a decade ago by buying their competition out, their was a period of time where wrestling only had a one stream market. Fans got bored of seeing the same things and enjoyed watching both competitors push each other to better the sport for the future.

The UFC has a past of buying out its competition, taking it over and closing it down. For example PRIDE Fighting Championships and the UFC’s buyout of Strikeforce brings up a lot of challenges and for the sport to grow the UFC has to keep Strikeforce a seperate company and maintain it as a point of difference for the viewer, but saying that in the forsee-able future three unification “super fights” where UFC champions and Strikeforce champions will most likely meet; Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz (which has already been signed for UFC 137 on October 29th in Las Vegas, Nevada), Cain Valesquez vs. Alistair Overeem and Frankie Edgar vs. Gilbert Melendez.

It’s obvious Strikeforce’s heavyweight division has the best fighters in the world, with Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Brett Rogers, Fabicio Werdum and Antonio Silva, the UFC wants to stack their heavyweight division as it isn’t as strong as the competitors, which leaves they’re current champion to be one of the only competitor’s who could compete against these world class fighters. The big question for the sport is which direction is Zuffa going to take Strikeforce, keep it as a separate company or just dissolve it? If they do Japanese MMA is in big trouble financially and the next competitor in line after the UFC would be the Bellator Fighting Championships or the Maximum Fighting Championships based out of Canada.
