Nick Diaz Vacates Strikeforce WW Championship For GSP Fight at UFC 137

It has today been revealed that Nick Diaz is no longer the Strikeforce welterweight champion, he vacated the title in order to challenge Georges St-Pierre for his 170lb championship at UFC 137 in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 29th, 2011.

Dana White made the announcement today that Diaz is, for now, a UFC fighter and will no longer be the champion of the California based promotion. He will be able to make a trip back at a later date if need be. Dana also revealed that two yet to be announced fighters will take to the Strikeforce cage to fight for the welterweight crown later this year.

“He will give up the title. He will give up his Strikeforce title. He will come in and fight Georges St. Pierre. Two guys will fight for the vacant belt in Strikeforce, and then we’ll go from there,” White said.

St-Pierre is coming off a string of decision wins that have failed to impress, defeating Thaigo Alves, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck and most recently Jake Shields at UFC 129 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Diaz on the other hand has been finishing all his fights since 2007, defeating lesser opponents no doubt but still in impressive fashion. He was last seen in action in April defeating Paul “Semtex” Daley at his own game via first round TKO.
