“The Coach” Shawn Tompkins Passes Away, Details and Autopsy Pending

It has just been revealed that long-time MMA trainer, Shawn Tompkins has sadly passed away while in Canada with the rest of his team, although at this time it is unclear what caused his sudden death.

Mike Straka, posting via Twitter account, said:

“Guys, it is with great sadness that I report the passing of our great friend & trainer Shawn Tompkins. Details developing. Autopsy pending. Details are pending Shawn was in Ca with the team. That’s all right now. I spoke with Emilie Tompkins and Sam Stout.”

Tompkins was a Canadian former kickboxer, mixed martial artist and considered to be one of the best coaches in the sport of MMA. He was the coach for the Los Angeles Anacondas of the International Fight League. At the time of his death, he was an instructor at the Tapout Training Center. Shawn has taught such notable fighters as Sam Stout, Chris Horodecki, Mark Hominick and since recently Goran Reljic, Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva. He has also fought in UCC, a Canadian MMA organization now known as TKO Major League MMA. He owns a professional record of 0-4. He officially took the reins from Bas Rutten as the Los Angeles Anacondas head coach on March 17, 2007, just before their matchup against the San Jose Razorclaws.

In August 2007, Tompkins brought his Team Tompkins and IFL Anacondas team over to join Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, and in October 2009, he resigned from Xtreme Couture and joined the TapouT Research and Development Training Center. Shawn was married to Emilie Stout, the sister of fellow fighter, Sam Stout. On Sunday, August 14, 2011 Shawn passed away unexpectedly.
