Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal and Return of Gina Carano on December 19th

Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez will put his title on the line against top contender, Jorge Masvidal on December 19th, at a yet to be determined event. A source close to the situation confirmed the news and the California based promotion likely to follow up with an official announcement any day now. On top of the lightweight battle former face of female MMA, Gina Carano will be back in action inside the Strikeforce cage that same night. No opponent has been mentioned at this point.

Melendez was last seen in action in April, destroying top rated Japanese fighter Tatsuya Kawajiri in the very first round. Prior to that he’d knocked off DREAM champion, Shinya Aoki via unanimous decision. Masvidal defeated former EliteXC 160 pound champion, K.J. Noons in June, winning the fight via unanimous decision. Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker had previously said the winner would become the number one contender for the lightweight title.

Carano had been set to return to action in June only to pull out after failing her pre-fight medical examination due to an unknown issue. Rumors abound that Carano was pregnant. It was later revealed that Carano was medically cleared by the Athletic Commission but was removed from the card for unknown reasons.
