Gilbert Melendez Defends Strikeforce Lightweight Title vs. Jorge Masvidal

Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez will indeed defend his title against number one contender, Jorge Masvidal on the December 17th Strikeforce card in San Diego, California. The fight had been rumoured to be scrapped after UFC President, Dana White expressed an interest in bringing “El Nino” to the octagon as soon as possible. The California based promotion announced the fight officially this afternoon.

Melendez was last seen in action in April, destroying top rated Japanese fighter Tatsuya Kawajiri in the very first round. Prior to that he defeated DREAM champion, Shinya Aoki via unanimous decision.

Masvidal defeated former EliteXC 160 pound champion, KJ Noons in June, winning the fight via unanimous decision. Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker had previously said the winner would become the number one contender at 155 pounds.
