Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard Both Pick Up Injuries, UFC 130 Main Event Off

The UFC today have confirmed that the lightweight title rematch between champ, Frankie Edgar and challenger, Gray Maynard won’t go down at UFC 130 in Las Vegas, Nevada, after both men picked up injuries in training.

During a media call today, UFC president Dana White said both fighters will likely be out six to eight weeks and could be rebooked for a major event in August or September. The Matt Hamill vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson bout will now headlining the event.

Edgar suffered a back injury due to bulging discs while Maynard is nursing a knee injury and healing from a facial cut that required stitches. “It was odd timing,” White said.

At UFC 125, Edgar attempted to defend his belt and avenge the only defeat of his mixed martial arts career, a unanimous decision loss to Maynard in 2008. Although Maynard almost finished early in the first-round, Edgar survived and took the fight the distance. The bout ended in a draw which prompted officials to book the third fight.

Edgar, speaking via UFC.com, said:

“All of the reports are talking about my ribs, it’s actually my back. My back’s been bothering me for quite some time. A few weeks ago I had to take a week off so that my back could calm down and I was trying to fight through it. I got through it and it kept blowing out on me here and there but then I ended up blowing out a rib last week. My rib kept popping in and out and then last week my back went out on me really bad, so I went to see a doctor and he said I’ve got bulging discs and now I’m going to go see a specialist to see what he can do about it. I saw a UFC doctor yesterday and he said my L2 and L5 discs are bulged, and he recommended that I don’t fight right now. I can’t even put my socks on or hold my kids, it’s pretty bad right now.”
