Shinya Aoki on U.S debut and UFC in Japan

DREAM lightweight champion, Shinya Aoki has recently spoke about transitioning from the ring to cage for his U.S. debut next month against Strikeforce title holder, Gilbert Melendez. Aoki has also stated that the UFC is fighting a losing battle in the Japanese market.

Aoki, speaking via MMAWeekly.com, said:

“I will adjust my fighting strategy to the cage fighting. It’s not a big difference of what (I) need to do.”

Aoki also spoken about the added pressure of fighting in front of an expectant audience in Tennessee, something he says won’t be a factor on the night.

“A fight is a fight. I will do what I can do during the fight. I don’t feel special for the exposure, I will just focus on the fight. I will do what I can do, and I’m going to have a plan B. It’s going to be a tough fight, I’ll be back to Japan to have (some) hard training.”

Aoki, speaking to MMAJunkie.com about UFC in Japan, said:

“I think the UFC in Japan will not be successful. It’s a very special market.”

This past summer UFC President, Dana White comments on the politics in Japan, resulting in the the end of PRIDE FC:

“We brought PRIDE to keep PRIDE running. But that wasn’t their plan over there. That was their plan when they were sitting across a table from us telling us when we were buying it, but they had other plans. They can shut things off and basically do whatever they want over there.”

Dana also promised that ther UFC is coming to Japan no matter what the circumstances, adding:

“They’re going to have to kill me. That’s where they’re going to have to do. We’re coming there no matter what. We’re coming there. We’re going to break through this thing. We’re going to get past these dirty, sneaky, bad guys in Japan, and we’re going to make it happen.”
