Demian Maia on being the Underdog: “I have prepared for this situation before”

UFC middleweight #1 contender, Demian Maia has been stating his opinion on being labeled “the underdog”, speaking about the last time he was competing for a world title, and his thoughts on fighting in Abu Dhabi.

Maia, speaking during a media conference call, said:

“I have prepared for this situation before. In 2005 I was fighting the World Cup of Jiu Jitsu and I was going to fight the best [BJJ] fighter of the world in that time. And I already had a loss to him. I was thinking, ‘He was good standing, he was good from the top, from the bottom – how am I going to win?’”

“But I just came there, I kept very concentrated and I ended up world champion in that year. I beat the guy [who] was voted in 2004 and 2005 the best jujitsu fighter in the world.”

Maia also commented about fighting in Abu Dhabi:

“I’m pretty happy to fight there because actually what drew me to the UFC was my win in the Abu Dhabi 2007. So ADCC, the Abu Dhabi Combat Club is something that you know I really have – I’m very glad that I was fighting there and I won. And now I can come back and fight, again, in their land which is very nice for me. Grappling is my style, I hope I will do that there.”
