Dana White: Winner of Henderson vs. Pettis will get UFC lightweight title shot

UFC President, Dana White has today revealed that the winner of the WEC 53 lightweight title fight between current champion, Benson Henderson and number one contender, Anthony Pettis will get a shot at the UFC lightweight crown, eventually meeting the winner of the Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard next year.

Henderson has stopped eveyone in the lightweight division, defeating top contenders and bitter rivals, Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone, twice in quick succession. As for Pettis, wins over the likes of Danny Castillo, Alex Karalexis and Shane Roller took him to his title shot.

Henderson, speaking via AZCentral.com, said:

“My initial thought? That’s cool. It’s awesome. I still have the same dreams, same aspirations. For me, it was only a matter of time. It just so happens that it happened in this exact time and place. After the winner of the Dec. 16 fight with Anthony Pettis, after that, well, I am the No.1 UFC title contender among lightweights and will fight the winner of Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

“I did not expect it. I had no idea what was going to happen. I just knew I was going to be the UFC champ at one some point in time. Thankfully, the time is now. My next fight is always the biggest fight of my career. There’s a little more at stake on this one since they announced the winner will be the No. 1 UFC title contender right away.”

“But my next fight is always the biggest fight of my career. This is my defining moment. Who is Ben Henderson? Is he the next title contender? Or will he lose and fold under pressure? No. I’m always going to show everything I got. I’m going to open up my heart. I’m going to open up my soul. And the fans are going to love it. I’m going to go out with my head held high and the belt around my waist with my hand raised at the end of the fight.”
