BJ Penn vs. Matt Hughes III co-main event at UFC 123 in Detroit, Michigan

UFC legends, BJ Penn and Matt Hughes will square off for a third and final time at UFC 123 at The Palace in the Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills, Michigan on November 20th, 2010.

Penn received his first MMA championship in 2004 at UFC 46. Penn jumped up in weight classes to challenge the five-time defending UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes to fill a title contention slot in a division where Hughes had already defeated all the available opposition. Heavily favored to win, Hughes lost the fight four minutes into the first round by rear naked choke after giving up his back with only 23 seconds left in the round.

In September 2006, Hughes defended his title in a rematch against BJ Penn, stopping him in the third round. Hughes trapped Penn’s arm and landed approximately 40 blows to the defenseless Penn’s unprotected face, forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Hughes is riding a three fight winning streak, defeating the likes of Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie, and Ricardo Almeida. Penn on the other hand is coming off back to back losses to Frankie Edgar, prompting this move back up to welterweight.
